I am very pleased to say that I will be reading at the fourth edition ofStuff Happens at the Dylan Thomas Centre in Swansea, held on the 4th March 2010 (World Book Day). From the Facebook event page: "Celebrate World Book Day at the Dylan Thomas Centre Thursday, 4th March 10am – 11pm The Dylan Thomas Centre celebrates World Book Day on 4th March with offers in our bookshop throughout the day, and a special, free evening event at 7pm. Square Magazine January Sale

Just over a week ago I read a few poems at Square's 'January Sale' night, which was held at Cardiff's Poet's Corner pub on City Road. As always, the event was a showcase for some fantastic talent (although unfortunately I missed the first four performers as Google maps decided to send us to Poet's Corner, Grangetown rather than Poet's Corner, City Road – I'm still not sure if the former actually exists). From squaremag.net: "Finding itself with a number of unsold back issues, Square is doing the decent thing and flogging them off cheap in the time-honoured tradition of a January Sale! There is also a lack of funding from the Books Council for the next issue of Square, so there's a bit of a need to raise funds to keep Cardiff's brightest poetry mag running!" So if you missed the night but would still like to help Square out with funding for their next issue, go to squaremag.net and take advantage of the (continuing into February) January Sale. In return for a measly £1 you can get a copy of one of the first four issues of a great independent literary magazine (later issues are reduced in price too – only £2 for Square 5 and £2.50 for Square 6) or copies of poetry collections by J. Brookes and Nick Fisk (both of which I would recommend) for only £4 each. Hopefully the Welsh Books Council will resume funding for Issue 8 onwards, but for Issue 7 Square need your help. So go get your hands on some great literature for a low, low price and help out an independent magazine in the process, whilst stocks last. Despite my poor attendance at The Crunch open mic night recently (I haven't made an appearance since August due to breaking my foot in early September), I have been selected by Adam Sillman to represent the night at the Dylan Thomas Festival edition of Stuff Happens, a showcase of up and coming local poets held at The Dylan Thomas Centre, Swansea. From the 2009 Dylan Thomas Festival brochure: "The third of our occasional events, where several young, up and coming local poets deliver short, sharp readings between music, Dadaist doodlings and other fun stuff happening!" Last night saw the launch of the third issue of Square magazine at Cardiff’s A Shot In The Dark café, with guest reading from Alun Rees, Stuart Thomas, Jim Bartlett, Jackie Jones and myself. It was a great night, with some excellent poetry on offer from my fellow readers and the one poet who braved the open mic that followed us. Two of my poems, 'Streak' and 'Seated Female Nude, c. 1916', are featured in this issue of the magazine, which you can buy here or at one of the locations in Cardiff listed below:
Square is also available from selected shops around Wales via The Welsh Books Council (including Borders in Swansea, where I picked up my first copy of the magazine). |
